Lab and embryology team photo

Lab and embryology team introduction
The laboratory team at No.1 Fertility is made up of highly qualified embryologists, each bringing extensive expertise in micromanipulation, cryobiology, and embryo culture. Our scientists are not only leaders in their field, they understand that behind every sample is a deeply personal story. They combine technical excellence with compassion, working collaboratively to help every patient feel confident and supported throughout their treatment journey. At No.1 your embryologist isn’t a faceless scientist hidden in the lab, they speak with you throughout your cycle, providing updates on your gametes and embryos and making complex information easy to understand.
The laboratories at No.1 Fertility are purpose-built to deliver scientific excellence, precision, and safety at every stage. Our facilities feature state-of-the-art incubators with time-lapse imaging as standard, advanced micromanipulation technology including polarised light microscopy, and enhanced environmental monitoring, enabling precise control of every condition that influences egg, sperm, and embryo development.
To maintain absolute reliability, our laboratories operate on an uninterrupted power supply system supported by backup generators. This ensures laboratory function remains stable and secure at all times. In addition, our cryostorage rooms are equipped with infrared scanning devices, weight monitoring scales and in-tank temperature sensors to continuously monitor environmental consistency. Every piece of equipment is tracked through multiple layers of 24/7 back-to-base monitoring systems, alerting our team instantly to any variation in conditions—providing complete confidence that every gamete and embryo is protected.
Clinic strengths and areas of focus

IVF add-ons offered
Add-ons listed here may be offered selectively, and clinics may offer additional options not shown.- Artificial oocyte activation (AOA)

- Endometrial receptivity array (ERA)
- ICSI
- NK cell testing
- PICSI

- Sperm DNA fragmentation testing
- Time-lapse embryo monitoring (eg EmbryoScope)
Other IVF add-ons offered:
Intracytoplasmic Morphologically-selected Sperm Injection (IMSI)
Piezo ICSI
AI-Assisted Embryo Assessment
How this clinic uses IVF add-ons:
Many things that other clinics may consider add-ons (so that patients may be billed extra for them), we consider standard of care and provide for all patients at no extra cost. These include things like timelapse incubation, Embryo Glue media for transfer, and polarised light microscopy at ICSI. ‘Extras’ that involve no risk and potential benefits should be available to all patients and if we believe something is the gold standard then it becomes simply our ‘standard’.
Other add-ons are suitable only for certain patients or certain situations, or may have less clear evidence for their safety or efficacy. In these cases your doctor will clearly discuss the options with you, provide information and fact sheets on the potential risks and benefits, and work together to find the right treatment path for you.

Embryology information and access
⭐ Embryology information and access:
- Embryo photos provided
- Embryo grades provided
- Embryology updates available during cycle (before completion)
- Embryology summary provided after cycle
- Patients meet with embryology before retrieval

- Patients can speak or meet with embryology on request
Embryo types that may be transferred
🔍 Embryo types that may be transferred:
- Day 2–3 cleavage stage embryos
- Day 5–6 blastocysts
- Day 7 blastocysts
- Poor quality or C-graded embryos
- Embryos from 0PN/1PN/3PN zygotes
- Mosaic embryos
Additional information:
Our standard, and strongly recommended, practice is that transfer of day 5 embryos. However, we completely understand that for a variety of reasons, some patients may wish to undertake a day 3 embryo transfer and we are happy to support you in doing so. You also have access to a direct number for your embryology team so that you can talk through any concerns you may have and decide on what is right for you and your embryos.
We do allow the transfer of a number of non-standard embryo types, for example those with unclear fertilisation, however, we require that confirmatory genetic testing is performed in these cases.
Options for unused embryos
Besides long-term storage and disposal, which most clinics offer, this section shows other options available at this clinic for unused embryos.- Accepts embryos for named donation
- Accepts embryos for embryologist training
- Accepts embryos for scientific or clinical research
- Allows release of embryos for ceremonies or other personal reasons
Lab safety and accreditations
- Electronic witnessing system
- Double witnessing
- 24/7 temperature and environment monitoring
- Cryotank and incubator alarms
- Back-up power for incubators and cryotanks
- RTAC accredited (Australia/NZ)
How the lab prevents errors and protects embryos:
Since our inception in 2018 our laboratories have always functioned with gold standard witnessing and safety procedures in place.
No scientist ever works alone and procedures are always witnessed by both a second scientist AND an electronic witnessing system (RI Witness, a continuous RFID witnessing system that is constantly checking every dish or tube, even without any input from the scientist).
Getting this right is the single most important thing in any laboratory and our scientists have the safety possible systems without any limitations imposed by cost or staffing requirements, what they need is what they get, there can be no compromise when it comes to witnessing.
The safety of our stored gametes is equally uncompromising. All of our storage tanks are protected by three independent layers of monitoring (temperature sensors, weight scales and infrared monitoring) all with independent communication lines to alert our team to any deviations. Additionally, we are the only clinic in Australia to have our own liquid nitrogen generator onsite, ensuring that even in the event of supply disruptions our storage tanks remain secure.
Our scientists are paranoid so you don’t have to be, and we’re proud of how ‘over-the-top’ our extra layers of protection are.
